Each storage chest on
this page is created in my shop using a combination of new and recycled
solid woods. The frame and top are made from poplar or maple, both
native timber. The floor section on the inside is fashioned from
thick aromatic cedar.

construction, and pricing, as well as a larger picture and other

The new wood is textured by hand with a scrub plane,
a traditional tool which is still used by some woodworkers to prepare
rough wood for final dimensioning. The textured surface is then
brushed with multiple coats of recycled latex or oil paints, mis-tints
or returns which I obtain from local paint stores. Different colors
are alternately layered and sanded down until a defined glaze and
texture has been built up.
The tops of the chests open in the traditional manner, hinged at
the back. Each is equipped with a wooden lift-up stay. However,
one of the unique features of these chests is the side or front
doors which allow easy access to the interior without having to
lift the top. This is especially helpful if the chest is used in
the living room and has multiple items placed on the top, such as
lamps or large books. Click here to see
an example of this.
They function perfectly as wedding trousseaux, or wedding chests,
blanket chests, and as any type of long or short-term storage chests.
They are particularly
safe as toy chests because a child does not have to lift the top
to get to the toys inside.
